We see the light….

We see the light….

The sale of a vintage Wegner daybed to a french shop was the kick-start of our adventure. We – Carl and Malene – are both passionate about design and design history and this passion quickly filled up our home.

To achieve some more space in our home we started out by having yards sales – at first in our own garden. Soon we drove to flea markets around Denmark, selling our items. It seemed as if we came to the flea markets with a full van and left again with a full van – only now with new vintage purchases.

This hobby was taking more and more of our spare time and we wanted to be able to sell our handpicked items abroad too.

We did some research and two years ago we opened our Etsy Deerstedt shop. Only a few months later we were at a crossroad that led to a fulltime position in the shop. Our biggest dream came true and we turned our hobby to our job. It still is a hobby and doesn’t feel like a job.

The lovely thing about selling vintage items is, that they tell a story about the past, they reminds us that modern design doesn´t have to be the brand new trendy items and that they are sustainable in every sense.

It is a big satisfaction to find a rare designer lamp, take it home and make it shine again and even renovate if necessary. We enjoy the work with these design pieces and we are constantly creating beautiful locations where we take our pictures for Etsy and also social media like Instagram, Pinterest, WordPress and Twitter that makes the items stand out.

The social media and Etsy give us the opportunity to get in contact with vintage design fans all over the world. We go treasure hunting both for ourselves but also to fulfil the requests that our customers send us.

Sometimes we are so fortunate that the request we get is not just about an item but an interior solution for a customer and due to Malenes background as an interior designer we also manage assignments like this.

We would be very happy if we could help you with a special piece or ideas for a whole setting, which stands out and makes your interior as personal and creative as you want.

In our summer vacation we allways go to Sweden in our small summer house in the swedish woods. And every time we go treasurehunting for vintage and retro items in the numerous loppis-places.

Amazing vintage lamps, cool teak furnitures, industrial lighting and fun retro home decor – Retro & Prylar have it all.

Sigurd Lindkvist, Carl Thore and Granhaga Metalindustri

The real name of the designer known as Carl Thore was Sigurd Lindkvist, and he was born in 1916 in Amal in Sweden’s Dalsland. He joined Granhaga Metallindustri in the early 1960’s, for whom he designed lights and was also head of sales, remaining with the company until he retired in around 1981.

The name Carl Thore actually is the two middle names of Sigurd Lindkvist. It was a client who asked for the Sigurd Lindkvist for the name of the designer and Sigurd Lindkvist just said “Carl Thore”. Thereafter the Granhaga lights were embellished with a small label on which the words “Design Carl Thore” were printed in a handwritten-style font.

The most famous lamp that Carl Thore designed was the Trava (Stack in English). Travas were produced in several variations of style and size. The great thing about the Trava design was the many way of assembling it. You could turn the shades or add more shades – therefore we see so many variations of the Trava lamp today.

Ateljé Lyktan and the Bumlings

”Good lighting is not always lots of light, but always several light sources”  85906700

Anders Pehrson

These are the words of Anders Pehrson. Anders Pehrson took over the company in 1964 and this was the beginning of a more industrial sense in the history of the company, which dates back to the early 1930’s. His philosophy of furnishing a room with many different lighting points resulted in a wide range in which groups of product families were very important. He would speak about the four important Fs: Form, Funktion, Färge and Familie (in Swedish),  (Form, Function, Colour and Family) His biggest success Bumling was one of his many classic products.

bumling

‘Bumling’ means boulder in Swedish, and is used colloquially to describe things colossal or otherwise unwieldy. It is what a friend of the designer Anders Pehrson allegedly called Peh- rson’s new pendular lamp when it was first exhibited at the 1968 lighting fair in Gothen- burg. The lamp in question was bulbous, bright green and over half a metre wide. This was the birth of Bumling, a Swedish design classic. You can find the impressive brass pendant and the cool wall lamps in the Deerstedt Etsy shop
